Mr. Rohan Pethiyagoda

Winner of the Rolex Award in 2000, Mr. Rohan Pethiyagoda founded the Wildlife Heritage Trust (WHT) of Sri Lanka, which functions independently and serves as an inspiration for conservation in the developing country. Working with a team between 1990 and present, funded by the WHT, Mr. Rohan Pethiyagoda has discovered 50 new species of amphibians, 22 freshwater fishes, 17 reptiles and 44 freshwater crabs among other animals on the island.

In 2007, he published “Pearls, Spices and Green Gold: An Illustrated History of Biodiversity Exploration in Sri Lanka”, an illustrated book that introduces botanical and zoological explorations of Sri Lanka up to about 1990.

Currently, he is an Australian Museum Research Associate working with the collection staff of the Fish Section and pursuing his own research and editing projects.
