17 journalists and editors. 12 countries. One island. A Singapore Model.
This is the Journalist Visit Programme for the participants for the UNEP Media Workshop. On 24 April 2008, the participants were gathered at Pasir Panjang Ferry Terminal for a trip to our landfill, Pulau Semakau.
After a short tea reception upon arrival at the island, they were introduced to Singapore’s strategy for managing waste by Mr Ong Chong Peng, GM Semakau Landfill.
The programme was then followed by a presentation on the biodiversity of Semakau Landfill by our Museum Director, Professor Peter Ng – who did a wonderful job of highlighting his favourite animal of course! Crabs were everywhere on his slides!!
After the presentations and short Q&A, the participants were given a landfill tour and they continued to be amazed by the island and questions continued poured out to Prof Ng and NEA staff. Despite the relentless rain, the event was not compromised at all, and everyone was in high spirits, continuing the discussion even on the way back to the mainland.
This Singapore Model is indeed making an international splash.
